We have a unique approach to rural economic development that is based on the following beliefs:
- It is impossible to understand the scope and needs of rural businesses from an urban office. This series presents new insights in part because we collected and used data from paper records that are only available from rural town clerk offices. We also have spent hours conducting in-person interviews with rural business owners to glean insights not available elsewhere.
- Sustainable economic development begins with — and builds on — existing local strengths.
- Rural Massachusetts towns are places of opportunity, where existing businesses are doing fascinating work and new businesses can take root successfully.
- Research reports are only as good as the action they make possible.
